The CCHS Golf Team participated in the TSSAA Large Class State Tournament on October 3, 2017, at Willowbrook Golf Course.

The golf team placed sixth at the tournament. Over the season, the team had 52 wins and 8 losses.

Although the girls’ golf team has made it to the state tournament four years in a row, this was the first time for the boys’ team. The best moment out of the whole season, according to Coach Ray, was when they finally won regionals, securing them a spot at the state tournament. The team has been trying to win the region for five years and have only gotten second place in years prior.

This is Coach Ray’s tenth year coaching golf. The main reason he began was because he had already coached everything else, and he enjoyed playing golf and wanted to experience coaching it. When he was named 8-AAA coach of the year, Coach Ray had an extreme sense of pride in his kids because he would not have gotten the opportunity if they had not performed as well.

Eleventh grader Samuel Prater and second time participant at this competition said “It felt good to be back” when asked about the overall experience. A tip he has for a complete stranger to golf is to “Practice your short game [Putting] and be patient.”

When Samuel was asked why many people do not consider golf a sport, he said, “Go talk to Josh.”

Josh Perry, an eleventh grader on the team responded, “Well it isn’t a sport because it’s not in the Olympics… oh wait. That’s right, it is.”

So it’s possible to see someone from the golf team at the Olympics one day.
