Community Service Required for TN Promise

Kathryn Welch and Katie Sudberry

Senior students give back to the community  bringing support as opportunities arise through TN Promise.

Numerous opportunities are available for current seniors. Scholarships and financial aid are incentives for the required community service hours. The website www.tnachieves.org is a helpful resource used to submit the required eight hours of community service for TN Promise. This resource explains that community service is a requirement because, “it is a way to give back to your community, become involved, and say ‘thank you’ for this scholarship! It is also a great way to meet new people and learn about your community.”

Community service is and has always been a requirement for TN Promise recipients.  To get involved students must apply themselves by seizing opportunities provided by school counselors through emails and school announcements. Opportunities within our own community are posted as they arise, most of which will be in the spring. If students need help finding ideas for community service TN Achieves post multiple opportunities for each county at

www.tnachieves.org/community-service.

The eligible time frame for submitting community service hours began November 2, 2017, and must be completed by July 1, 2018. TN Promise allows for students to have the chance to receive  up to $4,000 toward tuition and fees. The deadline to sign up for TN Promise was November 1.

Mrs. Smith, one of our school counselors, believes, “Giving back to our community is beneficial for all citizens, not just high school seniors.”
