CCCHS Band Students Made Midstate
January 24, 2018
Recently, band students, saxophonist Alex Baldwin, trombonist James Brewer, and euphonist Wesley Wilson, preformed at MTSU Tucker Theatre for Midstate.
Midstate is an honor band for high school and middle school students in middle Tennessee. Roughly, more than 1000 students audition, and only a handful make it. Auditioning high school students have to know all 12 major scales, chromatics, and their prepared musical piece, in addition to sight reading (playing music without seeing it before).
In advice to other band students who want to try next year, Baldwin stated, “Don’t think that you are ever good enough to make it; you probably aren’t. Also, sight reading is honestly the “make it or break it” type of deal. Practice long tones too; it improves your tone.” Wilson adds, “Practice sight readings and scales. They’re more important than you think and are usually neglected.”
