This Week in History
January 28, 1986 – Challenger Space Shuttle breaks apart upon launch, killing all seven crew members.
The Challenger disaster resulted from faulty o-rings within the shuttle’s Solid Rocket Boosters (the white rockets attached to the orange tank) due to the excessively low temperatures on the morning of the take off. After just seventy-three seconds, two of one of the booster’s o-rings failed and caused large amounts of burning rocket propellant to slam into the fuel tank. The shuttle immediately disintegrated, killing its seven crew members, including a school teacher that was specially selected to become an astronaut.
January 29, 1845 -“The Raven”, by Edgar Allan Poe, is first published in the New York Evening Mirror.
Possibly one of Poe’s most well-known works, “The Raven” is a dreary, melancholic poem detailing a man going insane from the loss of his loved one Lenore. Although it did not yield much financial success, the book did indeed put Edgar Allan Poe “on the map”.
January 30, 1882 – Thirty second president of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is born in Hyde Park, New York.
Widely regarded in many circles as one of the best presidents of all time, FDR is one of the most recognizable presidents. He is given credit for instilling hope in the American people during the great depression with his “New Deal” program and also during World War II. FDR was the only president to serve more four terms, however he passed away with the first eleven weeks of his presidency from Polio.
January 31, 1606 – Guy Fawkes is hung for treason in England.
Guy Fawkes is a nearly unrecognizable name in the United States, but his likeness is known by many. The main character, V, in V for Vendetta wears a mask that bears his resemblance to mirror his actions and place in history. Also, the online hacker group, Anonymous, commonly has members don this mask to show their anti-government motives. Guy Fawkes was a Catholic perpetrator of the Gunpowder Plot of November 1605, where nearly two tons of gunpowder were placed under the House of Parliament in London to assassinate the entire Protestant government in one blow. Now, a national holiday takes place on November 5th in England celebrating his defeat.
February 1, 1974 – Ted Bundy strikes down Lynda Ann Healy.
Ted Bundy was an infamous serial killer that was reported to have killed over 36 different young women during his time as a serial killer. Healy was his second victim and he had just recently killed his first victim Sharon Clarke. Bundy would elude authorities for over five years, and would finally be captured for good in April of 1979. Ten years later, he’d be killed by electric chair in Florida.
February 2,1653- The Dutch city of New Amsterdam is incorporated. It would eventually be renamed to New York.
New Amsterdam was strategically placed to ensure Dutch control of the fur trade in the North East. However, it would eventually be claimed by the English and renamed New York City. Today, New York is one of the largest financial centers in the world.
February 2, 1959– “The Day the Music Died”
Anyone who has listened to the song “American Pie” by Don Mclean might be familiar with this date. Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash. At the time, these three were widely regarded as some of the best American Rockers. The crash would be immortalized in songs and films with Don Mclean, using it to show the loss of innocence in the early Rock n’ Roll generation.
