Taela Bland won first place in the Voice of Democracy essay. Former veterans Shirley Carper and Kim King came to represent the Veterans of Foreign Wars and presented an award and a $375 check to Taela in Mrs. Winton’s third period.  Bland was surprised to win the first place position throughout the Coffee County district. After the award was presented Carper and King shared with the class stories about their military experiences. The ladies also taught a brief lesson about the importance of freedom and what it means. This year’s essay topic was “America Our Hope for the Future”.

Bland’s focus in writing the essay was to emphasize that “Prejudice is something not to be taken into the next generation.” Bland chose to put a lot of passion and motivation in her essay. She spoke from a place that is personal to her. She encourages students to attempt the essay contest next year. She gives the following advice for those wanting to take part next year , “Don’t be afraid to be honest, and have passion for the topic.”
