Shooting tragedy on the set of “Rust” could have been prevented
December 2, 2021
On October 21, tragedy struck the set of “Rust” when a prop gun set off in the hands of award-winning actor Alec Baldwin.
Two crew members were injured in the accidental shooting. Award winning cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed and director Joel Souza was injured.
Hutchins left behind her husband and son.
Ever since the incident, the great debate is who is responsible.
Many try to blame Baldwin for the accident.
However, how can someone be responsible when they were handed a murderous weapon?
Baldwin, and everyone who had to handle weapons were directed to the armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed.
Gutierrez-Reed later stated that she had no idea that the guns were loaded and blamed producers for the unsafe state of the set.
It has also been reported that crew members were shooting the guns earlier in the day, which the armorer was not aware of.
Gutierrez-Reed, who has been in many unsafe sets recently because of her short fallings, has put people in risk by failing to properly inspect the weapons.
Her negligence has led to only hurt and the world turning their heads on Baldwin.
Baldwin, who’s been in the spotlight since the incident, has had great remorse towards Hutchins and her family.
Her family has come out to state that they do not blame Baldwin for the accident.
Unfortunately, much of the internet does not share the same views as Hutchins family.
Because of Baldwin’s past, and his stint on “Saturday Night Live,” that certain population has turned to demonizing and politicizing the tragedy.
Ultimately it was out of his control.
Baldwin could not control what happened and could not prevent what happened.
It could have been prevented if the right precautions weren’t neglected.
The first step in preventing another accident is to get Gutierrez-Reed off of sets.
There needs to be active change, and that can be done by putting the job into the right hands.
