Much of the world is devastated by the news of Queen Elizabeth’s passing. She passed away Sept. 8 at the age of 96. Queen Elizabeth II had a reign of 70 years and 214 days. Her reign is the longest of any British monarch and the longest recorded of any female head of state in history.

Some people may be wondering, what happens to the UK now? Her eldest son, Charles, will be king, and he has already chosen his title: King Charles III. In Britain’s monarchy, the heir ascends to the throne immediately upon the death of their predecessor.

In his first address to the UK as king, Charles III mentioned that his son, Prince William, would be invested as the new Prince of Wales. Due to this, there would be a Princess of Wales for the first time since 1997. Catherine Middleton is now the Princess of Wales.

The last Princess of Wales was Princess Diana. She died Aug. 31, 1997 in a car crash. Many people have speculated about what really happened that night. Princess Diana is the mother of Prince Harry and Prince William.

Queen Elizabeth II will be buried at Windsor Castle alongside her royal predecessors.
