In an interview with Aidan Hetrick, a senior here at CCCHS as well as an Eagle Scout, we find out more about the outdoor classroom and its recent renovation.
The first question that the CCCHS senior was asked was, “What exactly was done with the outdoor classroom?”
Hetrick explained, “It was in really bad shape at first, so what we did was remove the old stumps that were rotting and had a lot of fungal growth on them.”
He continued by elaborating further on the renovation process. “We moved the mulch to one side, and put down new landscaping. We added a border around it to keep the mulch in. There were four new benches built, a whiteboard, a table, and then added more mulch on top.”
After Hetrick went through the process of restoring the outdoor classroom, he was then queried about the steps to getting this project done.
“Well,” he began, “I asked Mr. Parsley if could do this for the school, and he said yes. I had to plan out how I was going to get it done and what I would need.”
Hetrick then expounded upon how the project was funded and how others assisted him in the process. “I asked for donations, and from there I had a few volunteers help me. If you were to count the hours of the volunteers, the planning out everything, and all the details, it would be like 200 hours.”
The high school senior was then questioned as to why he decided to complete this task.
In his response Hetrick replied, “The Eagle Scout project is like a service project that helps the community in some way. I just chose this school because I wanted it to be more personal, since my mom works here. I rode with my mom to school, and we would walk by the outdoor classroom everyday, and it was like a really bad way of starting the morning, just by walking by it.” It is evident that Hetrick believed there needed to be a change.
The final question Hetrick was asked was, “Did you gain anything through doing this project?”
The senior explained, “By doing this, I gained a lot of experience, like in leading people. I had to make sure that everyone stayed on task, and that the job actually got done,” Hetrick continued, “I got more experience in landscaping, I have never done anything like landscaping before, and that was what the project was about. I also had fun.”
