The Old Stone Fort Bridge was built in 1906, but now the state is considering tearing it down. The bridge has been here for centuries and has become a landmark. It has been a go-to place for high schoolers to take prom, senior, and graduation pictures, while serving a variety of other purposes.
Why tear down the Great Green Bridge? It’s because it is unsafe; the wood is slowly rotting and breaking down. Another reason is that they would like for the bridge to lead to another part of the trail instead of old, rocky, and grassy areas.
Manchester recipients are doing anything in their power to save the beloved bridge. Locals are even donating money and creating a Facebook group. They’ve been setting out signs on trailers, in yards, and in ditches as forms of propaganda.
Many question the reasoning, “Why not just leave it as a piece of history?” It may be old and rickety, but if they keep people off of it, it could still be a great view.
Old Stone Fort is a part of history and is a state park. The bridge is also an incredible piece of history. The park has been around for nearly 2000 years, but the bridge has only been there since 1906. Legally, the state can remove it but the people will continue to take a stand
