Christmas is referred to as “the most wonderful time of the year.” It’s all about giving, spending time with loved ones, and appreciating the joy and warmth of the holiday season, not to mention the yummy treats, lights, and decorations.
Many families have their own Christmas traditions. Some are very popular and well known, such as decorating a Christmas tree, baking cookies, singing carols, exchanging gifts, and many more. There are also many, many Christmas movies to watch, or even Christmas parades!
However, it is highly possible that you may not have heard of many of the Christmas traditions from other countries around the world
For an example, have you heard of Krampus in Austria? Krampus is a demonic creature that is said to be the “evil twin” of St. Nicholas.
Have you been made aware of the Shoes by the Fire in the Netherlands? The Dutch children there put one of their shoes in front of the fireplace and fill them with carrots or hay for Santa Claus’s horse.
It is likely that you also haven’t heard of Roller Skate Mass in Venezuela. Every year, between the Dec. 16 and 24, the roads of Caracas, Venezuela are closed to traffic to allow people to “barrel down the streets” on roller skates to get to the early morning Christmas mass in the Catholic churches.
One final tradition you most likely haven’t heard of is Pickle in the Tree, which originated in Germany. A decoration in the shape of a pickle is hidden on a Christmas tree. Whomever finds the pickle first, receives either a reward or good fortune for the next year.
Christmas is a time for many fun, unique traditions. Look around and you might discover your own Christmas tradition!
