HOSA Helps With Blood Shortage

On Thursday, January 31, CCCHS will be hosting a blood drive sponsored by the American Red Cross. Right now, the U.S. is in dire need of blood because the Red Cross collected 21,000 fewer donations during September and October than what was required to fulfill hospital needs. Currently, blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in. Everyone who is eligible to donate is greatly encouraged to do so.

To donate, the student must be at least 16 years old and have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian. Those 18 years and older do not have to have a permission slip signed in order to donate. Additionally, donors must meet certain height and weight requirements, have normal vital signs, a healthy hemoglobin level and a photo ID is required.

Students should get a good night’s sleep the night before the drive, eat a healthy breakfast the day of the drive and remember to stay hydrated in the 24 hours prior to the donation.
