Practicing your handwriting skills is an assignment most commonly found in grades kindergarten through the third or fourth grade.
Rarely would you find a high schooler working on an assignment practicing the spacing between their words, or writing cleanly and quickly. However, some people are beginning to question that norm, asking, can you still improve your penmanship in high school?
A study by Berninger, et al, in 2015 found that students in fourth through freshman year were capable of improving their handwriting after frequent handwritten practices. Some teachers, especially those teaching English, have taken this idea to heart and promptly edited their teaching style to include more assignments being written by hand.
Additionally, studies have shown that writing things by hand improves student’s memories, allowing them to better retain information they’ve learned. This coincides with the common tip to take notes during a lesson, as you’ll not only remember more from the teacher’s lecture, but be able to look back on your notes later for studying purposes.
All in all, the many, many signs point towards yes. Not only can you improve your penmanship, but handwritten information increasingly comes out with more and more benefits. Practice your handwriting, even if only for ten minutes a week!
