Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has made a huge dent in modern film. Taking place in 1930’s Mississippi, the main character, Sammie “Preacher Boy” Moore, played by Miles Caton, sets out with his twin cousins, Smoke and Stack, to start a juke joint but their opening night is interrupted by Remmick, a vampire. As the night goes on and more people are picked off and turned into vampires, the remaining survivors try to make it to daylight and, most importantly, do not invite them in!
Not only does this movie discuss issues like the Ku Klux Klan and slavery, but it also covers topics such as child loss and includes many references to voodoo throughout the film. Sinners was a box office hit, making around $368 million worldwide, and has broken the record for the most Oscar nominations.
