In March of 2025 the bill to ban cell phones in Tennessee schools was passed. This bill is now effective starting off the new 2025 school year at Coffee County Highschool. This new ban has had many mixed reactions from the public. Students and parents seem to have had the hardest time conforming to the ban while teachers have found it to be necessary for the students to learn effectively. Regardless of what the general public thinks, there is no denying that students’ cell phones have become an integral part of their everyday lives, and confused students now need to adjust to being away from them for eight hours. The ban specifies that phones, smart watches, and earbuds are prohibited during instruction time while the implementations for each school are different; they must follow that main rule. Teachers are only authorized to allow cell phone use for educational purposes.
This has created a major shift in the culture of the classrooms. For example some teachers allow students to use their phones for blooket, music, videos related to the teaching, etc. Not only has this ban been hard on students but the teachers have had to change the way they teach.
As of January 2026, one semester into the phone ban, the negative reactions have died down tremendously. Students have shown to conform pretty fast to the ban. Students have been observed to interact with their peers more since there is no phone to pull them away. Students are finding newer ways to connect such as email and face-to-face communication. Without the choice to be on phones it is easier to finish work at school which has lessened the procrastination. Studies have shown that without phones at schools students experience less added stress from notifications and social media. There are also some drawbacks to the restriction, such as the inability to get in touch with people right away, which causes anxiety for families, and the inability for students to receive more assistance with their schoolwork. While some students will undoubtedly rebel and find methods around it, the majority of students have demonstrated that they accept the ban as it is. Some have even claimed that they don’t mind it so much anymore and it is just normal now.
Although attitudes on the ban appeared to be divided at first, with the majority of people opposing it, the commotion has significantly lessened since the start of the school year. The question is will students take advantage of this chance to achieve academic success, or will they find other methods to feed their obsession with technology?
