Last year, the Coca-Cola corporation branched out its lineup of monotonous soda brands with a myriad of what one may describe as “Mystery Flavors.” Coca-Cola Creations had flavors with esoteric names like “Dreamworld” and “Starlight,” while Fanta brought us a powder blue drink dubbed “What-The-Fanta?” Not one of them tasted any good.
All of the “mystery” varieties suffered from the same problem: tasting too artificial. The Coke Creations were like drinking sweet chemicals, and the “What-The-Fanta?” sat firmly on the fence of tasting like cucumber or buttercream icing, much to the displeasure of everyone who partook of it.
This year is different, both in quality and name. “What-The-Fanta?” has now been named just “Fanta?” as if having a crisis of personality towards the audience. It is, however, remarkably passable for being colored an unappetizing shade of gray. It doesn’t taste like a Du-Pont sample, instead it’s lime-y with hints of grape and altogether not overwhelmingly sweet.
If you want to try this for yourself, the Zaxby’s in town has it stocked in their Coca-Cola Freestyle machine. I would never seek it of my own volition, but returning to Zaxby’s to get it again for this article was not the chore I thought it would be.
